Abstract

Biological plant protection is a safe alternative to chemical pesticides, however, the effectiveness of biological agents often varies depending on application conditions. Combining different biological control agents can improve the consistency of their protective effect, but requires preliminary assessment of their compatibility. The study aimed to evaluate the compatibility of Pseudomonas putida strain PCL1760 and Trichoderma asperellum strain T302 under in vitro conditions, in a gnotobiotic system and in the biological control of tomato Fusarium root rot. No mutual antagonism interactions between strains were observed in in vitro experiments. In a gnotobiotic system, co-inoculation with T. asperellum strain T302 increased the population density of P. putida PCL1760 on the apical part of tomato roots from 1.4×10⁶ to 11.5×10⁶ cells per 1 cm of root, i.e., 8.2 times compared to inoculation with strain PCL1760 alone. However, the presence of strain PCL1760 did not significantly affect the colonization of tomato roots by strain T302. When used separately and in combination, both strains maintained a bioprotective effect against Fusarium root rot of tomatoes, reducing the disease index from 0.68 to 0.13-0.26, with no statistically significant difference between variants treated with biocontrol agents. Combined inoculation of these two strains also effectively suppressed root rot development, reducing the disease index to 0.23. The obtained results demonstrate the compatibility of P. putida PCL1760 and T. asperellum T302 strains and highlight the potential of their combined application for protecting tomatoes from root rot diseases.
